Objective
By inviting artists to create new work at the intersection of their own homes and public space, we explore we explore new directions and bring art to the very heart of the city.
A characteristic feature of Welcome Stranger is that it works with homes. The exchange between the private and the public is therefore central. A variety of artists from different disciplines and backgrounds work together with Welcome Stranger to create new work; interventions that explore, shift, and break through boundaries. In previous editions, a total of thirteen artists have created work on the facades of their own homes, spread across different streets and neighborhoods in Amsterdam. The artworks are visible 24/7 and accessible to the public. For many participating artists, Welcome Stranger has been their first opportunity to work in public space. Artworks from previous editions have since found their way into museum collections or publications.
Governance Structure
The Stichting Welcome Stranger has a Supervisory Board whose task is to supervise the general affairs of the Foundation. The Supervisory Board also provides the Management Board with advice and guidance.
Remuneration policy
The members of the Supervisory Board do not receive any remuneration for the performance of their duties. Expenses incurred by members in the performance of their duties are reimbursed on the basis of expense claims. The management receives a project-related remuneration.
Policy plan
Welcome Stranger takes the personal environment of artists — where the tension between the familiar and the unfamiliar is most tangible — as the starting point for its artistic program.
The project embraces a deliberately decentralized approach: artworks are situated across various locations in the city, beyond the traditional walls of museums and institutions. Context, environment, and proximity all play a vital role.
This approach stems from the belief that art is not an island. It only truly comes to life when it intersects with everyday experience — with people, places, and moments throughout the city. At the core of Welcome Stranger are the values of equality, exchange, and experiment.
